Is AD6LoWPAN network autonomous? can it form network on its own (self-forming), heal on its own?
Verified Answer: RE: Is AD6LoWPAN network autonomous, self-forming & self-healing? by NagarjunaG
Yes. AD6LoWPAN is autonomous supporting self-forming and self-healing mechanisms, explanation pertaining to these is as given below.
1. Self-forming: AD6LoWPAN devices start the network formation as soon as they turn active. As no additional supervision is needed to form the network the AD6LoWPAN can be considered as self-forming.
: The configuration parameters are not required to form the network. By default the network is formed using the default configurations. User can modify these configurations using the ADWSN-UI-Tool.
2. Neighbor Unreachability Detection (NUD): This procedure is used by Routers and Hosts to determine whether the parent is reachable by sending periodic Neighbor Solicitation (NS) messages as uni-cast. Upon reception of Neighbor Advertisement (NA), the node updates the Neighbor Cache and marks the parent as reachable and restarts the periodic NS timer. If NA is not received from parent and all the NS retries are exhausted, the node performs Local Repair functionality as part of self-healing mechanism. The Local Repair is a procedure of detecting the loss of parent and rejoining the network in case the parent is lost. The loss of parent is detected with the help of Neighbor Unreachability Detection (NUD). If the parent is lost, the Node will initiate the Neighbor Discovery and the Network Join procedures.
3. UDP Handshake: This procedure is used by Host node which reports sensor data to Border Router periodically. If MAC Acknowledgement is not received by the Host from its parent, the Host node performs Local Repair functionality as part of self-healing mechanism.
