What low-power A/D conversion solution would you recommend to interface with the AD8233 front-end such as to facilitate high-quality ECG representation? (our motivation is arrhythmia detection)”.

    The required ADC performance in your ECG system, is very depending on the use case and overall noise specs you’re looking after. For a high quality ECG measurement, usually you look at ADC resolution specs varying from 16bits up to 24bits. Depending on the number of Leads, you need single channel or multi-channel simultaneous sampling ADCs. We have customers using a single channel AD7980 SAR ADC, but also the AD760x family for multi lead applications is being used. For 24bit application we have the AD7677 being using, but also the single channel AD7768-1 or AD7768-8 for multiple lead applications. The ADAS1000 includes ECG AFE (up to 8 leads) with integrated SAR ADC’s.

    When you want to detect Arrhythmia’s, you only need to look at the QRS and the intervals, so a 12 bit ADC could be good enough. In that case, please have a look at the AD7091. This is a 12 bit, 1MSPS low power ADC, but power also scales down with the sampling rate. This ADC’s in combination with the AD8233 will give an optimum on performance vs power consumption, for coin-cell battery powered application.
