It is possible to implement POWERLINK as a pure software implementation on standard Ethernet MACs. However, depending on your performance requirements, you would have to turn towards MACs that can provide acceleration features at layer 2. May I get some more information about the system that you are trying to build, say number of nodes, data sizes, cycle time, real-time and non real-time traffic, etc? This will help me suggest next steps.
