 Please refer the attached image of a POWERLINK cycle. You can see the isochronous (real-time) and asynchronous (non real-time) phases with guaranteed time allocated in each cycle for device communications. This applies in an industrial automation network that requires real-time cyclic monitoring of I/O, drives, etc by a PLC as well as non real-time configuration transfers, diagnostics, etc.)
