3/9/16: Sensors and How to Use Them

Is it possible to place all the sensors you talked about on a single silicon chip and what size it would be?

  • It would generally not be possible to put all the sensors on a single chip.   The sensors are usually made with different versions of the base IC technology, so they could not be processed together.   But for many of our sensor types, we will also add a temperature sensor to the chip.  The temperature sensor can be used to compensate for temperature sensitivity of the primary sensor, and can also be used as an additional measurement output.   There are many ways to design a temperature sensor in silicon, so they can accommodate many different process technologies.   There are other considerations involved in combining elements on a single chip, such as chip size, testing, and selecting combinations of elements that will be popular. 

    We do provide integrated sensor packages with our IMUs (inertial-measurement-units) which combine accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetic sensors to provide a complete system for motion detection.   This are built up with multiple chips.
