Is software-defined radio used? If so - to what extent?

  • Yes SDR radios are used but sometimes limited in scope. Where the goal is to have a completely waveform agnostic piece of hardware, in reality these systems only work with a handful of different waveforms. The industry is trending toward more software defined radios in general. The advantage of a software defined system is that the same piece of hardware can be loaded to work with different waveforms which helps intercommunication between different groups, who may each have a different protocol.
