Why isn't OFDM popular for Milcom and Satcom systems?

  • One of the disadvantages of OFDM is that there is a high Peak to average power ratio (PAPR). This results in a backoff that is required at the power amplifier output. The end result is that the range of the system is decreased. In satcom, this is a tradeoff where now a larger antenna is needed, or higher power PA where power is a valuable resource on a satellite. In some milcom systems, there seems to be interest in new OFDM technologies but we haven’t seen them come to fruition yet.
