Please explain folded products.

Please explain folded products.

  • A folded product is a signal from the DAC that is related to the DAC output frequency and the clock frequency. For example, a folded second harmonic would be the Fdac – 2*Fout. The “actual” second harmonic is 2*Fout, and it rises in frequency at twice the rate that the Fout rises. The folded component decreases in frequency at twice the rate that the Fout rises. Thus, for an Fdac = 5 GSPS, Fout = 900  MHz, the 2nd harmonic is 1800 MHz, the folded 2nd harmonic is 5 GHz – 1800 MHz = 3.2 GHz.
