It’s expensive and time-consuming for system designers to change their layout during prototyping to find the perfect DC/DC regulator to match unpredictable power consumption by ASIC, DSP, or FPGAs. So, here are 3 things we did to ease the pain for these system designers:
Same footprint and pin-compatible series of uModule regulators with different power levels allow system designers to keep the layout but change the uModule regulators. Easy. One may start with lower current if the FPGA datasheet indicates, then after prototype realizes that real consumption is 50% more. Simple scale up to the next uModule regulator.
Of course, there is a limit to above scheme which after certain higher power we must design a new package with different footprint. However, there is a benefit in all these uModule regulators. One can copy & paste the same layout, repeat the same uModule regulator and current share the outputs to raise the current. 8 times a 100A LTM4700 is an 800A POL. Scalable by current sharing.
Lastly, it’s our unique dual and quad output uModule packages. The outputs of each can current share which we call configurable. A quad 4A can be dual 8A, single 16A, one 4A and one 12A, etc. Which means, the customer qualifies only one part number and uses it for several different rails. No need to qualify 4 or 6 different regulators. The LTM4643 is an example. Refer slide 32 from webcast presentation.
