On behalf of Michal Raninec: How the sensor itself copes with a presence of any volatile organic compounds (VOCs) depends on the sensor structure and the filtering used to mitigate the risk of any damage. Depending on the application, sensors usually include some filters (made of graphite plus some chemical agents, for example), that reduce possibility of sensor damage or cross-interference (false alarms) when exposed to VOCs such as ethanol or other alcohols. Regarding the VOCs like methane or butane, these do not cause cross-interference or sensor poisoning unless they are present in huge concentrations, that would result in significant concentration of oxygen in the air.)
