On behalf of Thomas Cameron: Yes, digital beamforming is much more powerful in that each data stream (MIMO layer) can be mapped to arbitrary antenna ports. When we combine this with powerful channel estimation and interference mitigation algorithms (eg: zero forcing) the spectral efficiency can be very high.
