Referring to the diagram below. In the transmit mode, we upconvert our signal to mmwave frequency and then we split this signal into multiple paths. In each path we modify the phase of the path, and then amplify each signal and send it out of its’ respective antenna element. The phasing is controlled so that when all of these launched RF signals combine in the far field, they recombine constructively in the desired direction to form a beam in space. At the chosen beam direction we get the highest transmitted power, and off that angle the power decreases until we get a null due to destructive combination where all of the launch signals are out of phase.
