Reducing the Barrier in Ka Band Satcom Design and Calibration

About the Presenters

Qui Luu received her B.S.E.E degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA, USA, in 2000.  In 2005 she received her M.S.E.E from Northeastern University, Boston, MA, USA.  Since 2000, she has been with Analog Devics, Inc., where she is currently a system engineer/IC architect in the Aerospace and Defense organization located in Chelmsford, MA.  Her focus area as of recent has been on beamforming ICs and system development from the antenna to bits for electronically steerable phased arrays.  

Mike Ballou is an Applications Development Scientist in Keysight’s Aerospace and Defense Industry group, Mike holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern New Hampshire University. Mike has been working in test and measurement for 22yrs developing solutions for antenna testing and material measurements using Vector Network Analyzers. Before joining Keysight in 2000, Mike developed microwave materials and test solutions for the Aircraft industry.

The growth within satellite communication market continues to expand rapidly with advances in technology.  However, the barrier to entry is driven predominately by cost and risk.   To help ease the barrier to entry into the phased array technology space for satellite communication, the Aerospace and Defense organization within ADI has developed a Ka band evaluation platform.  Coupled with the development platform is a collaboration with Keysight Technologies on array calibration.  Phased array antenna calibration has typically been time-consuming and expensive.   A compact antenna range coupled with commercial test equipment provides an economical and fast solution for calibrating phased array antennas.

The attendee will learn:

  • Complete antenna to bits Ka band phased array developer kit solution
  • Flat Panel Array (FPA) design and construction including thermal management
  • Phased array measurement techniques and FPA characterization
