What is the cost to use GaAs in comparison with the silicon?
Answered on behalf of Dr. Thomas Cameron.
Unfortunately I can’t give you an exact answer as such a cost comparison needs to be conducted on a case by case basis. However, if we look at the general case, we can achieve a much higher level of integration in SiGe BiCMOS than in GaAs and SiGe runs on larger wafers so we achieve an economy of scale that we can’t reach on GaAs. Monolithic integration is the most cost effective approach to integration so the more functions we can include on our RFIC, the better.
Of course we need to keep our end application in mind. SiGe cannot achieve the same linearity or noise figure as GaAs, so these are the tradeoffs that need to be considered.
