[ADV7480] Packet format (sequence) for "RGB888" output mode of MIPI Transmission.

Category: Hardware
Product Number: ADV7480

Hi,

I have two question about packet format (sequence) of MIPI Transmission for "RGB" output mode of ADV7480.
I summarized the question to attached file "ADV7480_MIPI_Transmission_format_sequence_RGB.xlsx".
Please refer it.

I previously asked a similar question for "YUV422" output mode.
Please see the following thread.
https://ez.analog.com/video/f/q-a/541579/adv7480-packet-format-sequence-of-mipi-transmission

This time, this questions are about "RGB888" output mode.

Thank you!
Best regards.

  • Hi Tamu San,

Please find the below response for your queries,

I think ADV7480 outputs "B1->G1->R1 -> B2->G2->R2 -> ..." sequence because MIPI® Alliance Specification defines it like above. Is this right?

ADV7480 MIPI CSI-2 transmitter conforms to the MIPI D-PHY Version 1.00.00 specification by characterization but we are not sure about the order of output format.

So I think that ADV7480 can not swap the output sequence for "RGB888". Is this Right?

Yes, We don't find any register for swapping the RGB format in ADV748x manuals other than YUV.

Kindly note that, As per Hardware Manual the MIPI-CSI output format order is RGB only (Section 9.7). The supported MIPI-CSI output formats of ADV7480 are shown below.
    Thanks,

  • Hi Poornima San,

    Thank you for your reply.

I think that the "9.7MIPI OUTPUT FORMAT" you mentioned just only indicates the "Output Format" (e.g. YUV8, RGB888, etc.), and it does not indicate the output "order".

Does the ADV7480 comply with the MIPI® Alliance Specification for Camera Serial Interface 2 (CSI-2), Version 1.01.00?

If it does, I think that the order in which the ADV7480 outputs RGB888 will be "B1->G1->R1 -> B2->G2->R2 -> ...", as specified in the MIPI® Alliance Specification for CSI-2.
    What do you think?

If the ADV7480 does not output RGB888 in the order specified in the MIPI® Alliance Specification for CSI-2 and cannot swap the RGB, I think it will cause problems for many customers.

    Thank you!
    Best regards.

  • Hi Tamu San,

         Please find the below comment,

Does the ADV7480 comply with the MIPI® Alliance Specification for Camera Serial Interface 2 (CSI-2), Version 1.01.00 ?

Yes, ADV7480 is comply with MIPI Alliance specification CSI-2 but we have not checked "B1->G1->R1" order.

I believe, It will support since our ADV7480 is comply with MIPI Alliance CSI-2 specification then it should meet the MIPI Alliance specification requirements.

    Thanks,

    Poornima

  • Hi Poornima San,

    Thank you for your reply.
I think this is last question.

I understand it's too difficult to check the "B1->G1->R1" order of MIPI output because the dedicated equipment such as a MIPI protocol analyzer is required.
(I don't have the equipment, so I also can not check the output order of MIPI..)
However, I think that ADV7480 should be output RGB888 with "B1->G1->R1 -> B2->G2->R2 -> ..." order as specified in the MIPI® Alliance Specification for CSI-2.
What do you think? Your guess is fine.

Based on the guess, I would like to give the customer an answer that the output order "should" be as specified in the MIPI® Alliance Specification for CSI-2.

    Thank you!
    Best regards.

  • Hi Tamu San,

Yes we can inform customer, ADV7480 can output RGB888 with "B1->G1->R1 -> B2->G2->R2 -> ..." as per order specified in the MIPI Alliance Specification for CSI-2.

    Thanks,
