ADV8003 NTSC acquisition

Does anyone experienced with ADV8003 NTSC acquisition?

Do you think is possible?

I can see this configuration for the input

0xFE - 720x480i@60Hz that seems to be NTSC

but I think that NTSC is 485 active lines.

Can someone explain this fact?

    We can use the NTSC as 485 active line for border area. For Further details please refer section 8.4.19.4 in ADV8003 hardware Manual.

    Note: NTSC color encoding is used with the System M television signal, which consists of ​30⁄1.001 (approximately 29.97) interlaced frames of video per second. Each frame is composed of two fields, each consisting of 262.5 scan lines, for a total of 525 scan lines. 483 scan lines make up the visible raster.The remainder (the vertical blanking interval) allow for vertical synchronization and retrace.

    My idea is to use 2 adv8003 for the following functions:

    • NTSC to PAL conversion
    • DVI (previousy converted in TTL 24bit using TFP401 , another chip you can suggest) 1024x768@60p converted into PAL 576i@50Hz

    I suppose it is possible. Do you confirm ?

    My idea is to realize a static converter with non configurability possibility by the user. So my idea is not to use a MCU but a FLASH with saved configuration for ADV8003 to send to the chip during boot . Do you think is it possible?

    I see varius differet P/N for ADV8003 and I found also an ADV8005 . Which specific P/N do you suggest ? Which P/N of the eval board do you suggest?

     I suppose it is possible. Do you confirm ?

       Yes, it is possible with ADV8003 for above conversion.

    We can use adv8003 for default static configuration during bootup by writing set of i2c registers.

    And also Please let us your know detail design to comment about flash without MCU.

    I am interested in understand better the vid_format_sel[4:0] register. in particular I want to understand which configuration I should use if I have as input a RGB TFT (data format of DVI standard) over the TTL bus (24 bits buses plus control signals). in particular can you explain what is the difference between SDR and DDR? I need to use the 3*8 bits bus SDR?

  • Hi,

    vid_format_sel[4:0] - This signal is used to select the input format for the video data.It can be used to indicate which input pins are used to carry the upper,middle and lower range of bits. And configure according to your input format.

    Note: Double data rate (DDR) is supported only up to 50 MHz (an equivalent to data rate clocked with 100 MHz clock in SDR mode).
