i have some qw's:
1) Is it better for sound quality(SQ) to regulate volume by Analog Gain vs Digital?
2) what will have more SQ - using "16V PVDD + digital VOlume -3dB + ANAgain +21dB" or "12V PVDD + digital Volume 0 dB + ANA gain19dB " ?
From the standpoint of SNR, the analog gain will be better. When increasing the analog gain, the signal is increased at a greater ratio than the noise. With a digital gain increase, the noise and signal are both being increased at a 1:1 ratio. Thus, when possible using the larger PVDD and larger analog gain can yield a few dB of SNR improvement.
Page 7 of the SSM3582 datasheet (http://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/data-sheets/SSM3582.pdf ) also shows the SNR specifications for 12V and 16V PVDD cases, where the output level corresponds to 1% THD+N. While the output voltage noise is very similar for PVDD = 12V or 16V, the SNR improves several dB when the analog gain is increased accordingly.
