General DSP vs DDS Question

I'm looking for  a chip that can be programmed to generate at least 5 independent frequencies. This is for a medical research project, and it was initially suggested that I search for a DSP to do the job, but it seems like a DDS is what I'm looking for because DSP only processes and updates a digital signal, whereas a DDS can produce analog waveforms of the frequencies I desire. Is this correct? Sorry, I am very new to this stuff.
