Given one FMCOMMS1 sending an OFDM signal to another FMCOMMS1 from 1m away using the standard black antennas, and with the receiver's VGA set to 20.5dB (which is the maximum setting), why do only about 8 bits of the receiver's ADC remain operating?

Are you wondering about the ADC on the receive path and what is it's Dynamic range?
I guess you can say that. Performing the loopback test through antennas with VGA set to 20.5 causes all 14 ADC bits to be used for signal representation. A board to board test at 1m away causes only 8 ADC bits to be used. Is this expected?
I tried to get more info on this but the board has been obsolete and support is very minimal. Are you still having trouble with it? Have you considered using an integrates RF transceiver like the AD9361 or AD9371?
