If I am changing the external reference frequency, do I need to toggle the "Train Lock Detect Timer" from 1 to 0 then back to 1 every time I update the reference frequency?
Or, can I just leave that bit set to 1?
You have to retrain the lock detect timer any time the comparison frequency changes. In other words if R changes or if the external reference changes insure Reg x07 transitions from "0" to "1".
What if the reference frequency is set (at say 100 MHz) and Reg x07 was already trained and the bit left as "1", then I change the reference frequency to 90 MHz? Is it necessary to set the bit to "0" then back to "1"?
I am trying to avoid writing the register twice just to toggle that bit.
The rising edge starts the training sequence. You must set the bit low at some point.
