What happens if common mode input range is violated in a fully differential ADC? What are the symptoms/negative effects? What problems it would cause?

I am very interested in answers, because my predecessor put AD7691 to use as if it was pseudodifferential (IN- connected to ground), which would very likely cause such violation. Additionnalyy, IN+ has DC input.
