we used the parallel port to communicate with the AD7730 evaluation board. Our more recent evaluation boards use the USB port. A microcontroller is included on the evaluation board and this microcontroller communicates with the PC and it communicates with the ADC. The AD7195 is a new part that compares with the AD7730. It has ac excitation, it has lower noise than the AD7730 and lower current consumption. The AD7195 does not have the FIR filter though. If you are not using the FIR filter, the AD7195 may suit your application. The AD7195 evaluation board communicates with the PC via the USB port.
To communicate via the PC COM port (serial port), RS-232 drivers would be required on the board. A microcontroller would also be required to communicate with the PC and the ADC. We used this approach on the AD7738 evaluation board. I have attached the AD7738 evaluation board schematic so that you can see the necessary components.
