designing and constructing a multi purpose testbed including a Ghz signal generator

I want a versatile standalone device to use in experimenting with rf signals and other electronic applications. I have a raspberry pi to use as a controller but I could also use a Beaglebone. My device will include lots of usb ports, a smooth regulated power supply, a touch screen and interfaces to the serial,spi and i2c available on the raspberry pi. Will it be possible to use a DDS chip to acheive a 1 Ghz signal output and how would I go about it? I have used my pi to control an AD9850 successfully but its upper frequency is too low. I'm interested in working in the 430Mhz ISM band to begin with. It would be handy to have a simple spectrum analyser covering this band also.
