AVES connection to EVAL-ADV7842-7511

I'm trying to use an EVAL-ADV7842-7511P I just received.  It appears AVES is the software I need to use to control the board according to the webpage below:

http://ez.analog.com/docs/DOC-1681

Incidentally, on this webpage is says AVES is "the Evaluation software mentioned in the User guide" but AVES is never mentioned in the user guide (UG-235).  Instead the user guide talks about DVP which is not mentioned anywhere on the webpage.  That's incredibly confusing.

I loaded the driver for the EVAL-ADV7842-7511P on my PC and installed AVES.  My PC is connected to the EVAL-ADV7842-7511P via USB and shows up in my Windows Device Manager on COM7.  When I start up AVES it doesn't seem to detect anything.  I also tried starting up AVES with an RS-232 cable connected between my PC and the board.  The AVES user guide indicated it could find the board that way as well.  It did not.  There is nothing further in the AVES or EVAL-ADV7842-7511P user guides about getting AVES to connect to board .  Where do I go from here?

Thanks,

Nathan
