ADV7842 CP Core lock/unlock status

On page 64 of UG-206 (ADV7842 software guide) it states that for the CP_LOCK_RAW and CP_UNLOCK_RAW registers "Once set, this bit will remain high until it is cleared". To me this means that these bits indicate that a lock or unlock state has occurred at some time in the past. How do I know if the core is locked or unlocked NOW? If I clear the bits, will the bits then be immediatly updated to the current state? (I think the answer is "no - there has to be a transition before the status bits are updated".
