What is the effect of resolution on High Speed DAC performance?
Changing the resolution of a DAC can be noticed differently depending on how you look at a signal
- In the time domain, different resolutions will be noticed by how accuratly you can set the output to a given level. For a 20mA part for example, the resoltuion of 1 LSB will be 20/1024 or 19.5uA for a 10 bit part and 20/4096 or 4.9uA for a 12-bit part.
- In the frequency domain, different resolutions will set the noise floor of your spectrum to different levels. Resolution has a second order effect on other AC performance metrics such as SFDR or IMD as these spurs are primarily set by cross-talk or dynamic distortion.
