What does the interpolation and modulation function do in a high speed DAC? When and why is this function useful?

Check out the mini-tutorial linked below. It covers the interpolation part of the question. Essentially, it increases the sample rate of the system, and by doing so, increases the distance (in frequency domain) of the output frequency with the imaged frequency (Fs - Fo). This allows for a lower order output filter on the DAC to suppress the image frequency.
