The AD5381 has a load current spec of +/-1 mA and a short circuit current spec of 40 mA. What is the difference?
The load current spec is the recommended maximum current available from each channel. By taking no more than 1mA, the outputs will meet all the specification listed in the data sheet.
The short circuit current is to protect the device if an output is connected to ground or the load takes more current. No more than 40mA will flow from the output pin but the output voltage will not be accurate.
