Control and display of delay time?

I'm looking at the ADAU1452 in particular.  The idea is to have a control of total delay time through the DSP and have that delay time displayed on a 3 digit or so numeric display.  This is course delay steps (think of lipsync type of control) of perhaps half a ms.  It seems that an external micro controller is the likely the best way to do this but I'm wondering if there is a way to do this in a self boot arrangement.  At a very basic level it would need up & down buttons with a single press causing a single step increment.  A nicer interface would probably have high and low speed jumps.  Any thoughts?
