Adding global variables stops code working

I have been modifying the VideoInEdgeDetection software that is part of the Blackfin SDK. I have been trying to add global variables to count the number of frames in vs frames out so I can see if I'm losing any frames.

So I declared the global variables and then try incrementing them in the VideoIn & VideoOut callbacks. But the mere act of adding these stops the code from working completely! i.e. there is no output to the screen at all.

I know it's a bit vague but can anyone give me an idea as to what could be going wrong. I don't get any compile/build errors...

Also, is there a way for me to display these variables? I tried using printf to show a completely different variable and that slowed everything down immensely.
