Debug at bootup

What is the typical way of debugging when loading a program to your blackfin?  I have a BF538F and using VisualDSP++ 5.0.  I tried to do the Settings -> Bootload.  It looked like my program was running from the disassembly window, but it was not printing out any of my printf debug messages in my code.

At the end, I want to boot from 16-bit flash memory.  My SW3 boot mode select switch is on 1=ON (up), 2=OFF (down).  I use the flash programmer in the tools bar and load my loader file.  After I cycle the power, what is the best way to debug what is going on instantly?  Is it possible to use the debug agent to print out my printf debug messages in this scenario as well?

Any recommendations are much appreciated.  Thanks!
