Zero init sections at boot time vs run-time

We are having an internal debate about when to init the zero init sections.   One option is to let the spi bootloader do it, but that requires modifying the boot loader to handshake with the host to allow possibly large sections to be initted.   The other option is to allow the compiler to do it at run-time.

We are using the 21489, and have no external memory.

Is the compiler capable of specifying the run-time code to do this?  What options need to be specified?  or should we modify the bootloader?

How would one tag these sections to keep the bootloader from zero-initting and allow the compiler to do the init?
