ADV7511 audio playback at 44100Hz is way too fast

Using the ADV7511 on a zynq as in the reference design.

Audio at 48kHz and its multiples is fine, so playing 440Hz on 48kHz, 96kHz and 32kHz rates sounds like the middle A key.

Playing at 44100, the audio is way to fast, and the pitch is off.

I noticed there's a fixed 12MHz clock for the audio, I'd expect a request to reconfigure it for other frequencies (I'm actually using an external clock to create it, so I could have it run at any rate), but that doesn't happen.

The reference design also uses this fixed clock, so how is 44100Hz playback supposed to work?
