ad9520 eval software under win8/virtualbox?

I've been using the eval software under 64-bit windows 7. I want to use the eval software on my 32-bit ubuntu 14.04 laptop. I've installed VirtualBox 4.3.18 and am hosting 32-bit win8. The win8 seems to recognize USB; I see thumbdrive activity and the "ADI Evaluation System". In the System of the win8, I see the "ADI Evaluation System (LRFDev)", and the contents look the same as the working win7 drivers.

The win8 virtualbox also reads a plugged-in thumbdrive fine. But when I try to startup the ad9520 eval software, it says it doesn't find any boards. I've also tried an AD9510 system/eval software install, same problem.
