What is the function of subcarrier frequency lock (SFL) and how is SFL used to drive an encoder directly from a decoder?

With the ADV7393 in mind, the SFL input is used to drive the colour subcarrier DDS system, timing reset, or subcarrier reset. The SFL can be used to lock to an external video source. This alters the subcarrier frequency to compensate for line length variations.
