Analog Audio Input Levels on ADV7850

The datasheet for the ADV7850 talks about support for a 2.8V rms audio input signal on page 28.  In that same section it also says "The input level at the analog audio input pins on the ADV7850 is 880mV rms." and shows 22K resistors on the input pins.  I understand the resistors are meant as a voltage divider to bring the 2.8V signal down to 880mV but I have a few questions:

  • What input signal is 2.8V rms?
  • If my signal is <<2.8V can I drop the value of the resistors or even remove them for <880mV?
  • What happens if some one does put a larger signal in?  Will it clip or destroy the part?
