this concerns the ad9361. What exactly would I have to do if I simply wanted to send out a CW tone out of TX?
Moving this question the AD9361 to the Wide Band RF Transceivers community.
The device needs to be configured for Tx and the BIST generator needs to be configured and enabled.
Please see page 71 of UG-671 AD9361 Register Map Reference Manual on how to use BIST.
The page says
"See Engineer Zone for a FAQ describing the BIST functions in more detail."
However, the link (Welcome | EngineerZone ) is dead as for now (2014-08-20).
Does anyone know where the page is?

Assuming that you want a "tone" offset from the carrier you would generate I and Q signals that walk around the unit circle at a rate that is equal to the offset with respect to the carrier. For a simple example if have a 4 Msps input sample rate and you are supplying 8 samples per cycle (one sample every 45 deg) of cos and sin to I and Q you would generate a 500KHz tone offset from the carrier. If you generate samples in the order that rotates counter clock wise then the offset is higher. Clockwise then the tone is lower than the carrier.
