Is the SPORT on the 2148x able to directly generate the ADAT optical serial data stream? We need to handle 8 channels of 48 kHz audio in the ADAT format and 4 channels of 96 kHz audio in the SMUX II format.
Can you give more details on the ADAT optical serial data stream ?
In general ,there are 8 Sports in ADSP-21489 and hence it can handle 16 channels of data (each sport has 2 channels) .

Usually a transceiver chip is used for the electrical/optical link for ADAT, see the wavefront reference at the link above. Input is usually 4 times I2S. So the 2148x can handle it, but it can't generate directly an ADAT binary stream. The additional chip is necessary.
Hm, can't you create the bitstream yourself then by software?
The protocol of the ADAT stream is not very complex.

Well, they implement it all on a FPGA...
It seems that receiving will be a little bit tricky on a SHARC due to the PLL implementation but transmitting should not be so difficult.
I suspect the only reason why SHARCs do not support it by hardware is that there was a patent on ADAT light pipe.
