Differential Input Protection Required on AD8217 AD8218?

These current shunt monitors give absolute maximum values of +/- 1V and +/- 5V respectively, for the differential input.  Do these inputs have transient protection, or should some sort of clamp be added externally?    The examples on the datasheet do not show any extra circuit, even for the high side motor monitoring example.

I have placed a shottky diode across my shunt resistor with no deviation in my measured values, however this may or may not be required.
