We are designing a board with 21469 and FPGA. Later we would like to boot from FPGA via Link Port, but for the first test we would like to boot directly with HPUSB-ICE. Is this possible?

Yes, it is allowed to download a program if the processor has not booted. But you need to consider the initial boot settings of that particular peripheral in order to connect to the emulator without any issues.

Yes you need to consider the boot setting of that particular peripheral. For instance, for link port boot seetings BHD is 0 in LCTL0 ie when the buffer doesnot fill the core hangs. This is the reason you are seeing a hang when the boot mode is set to link port booting. You do not see this for SPI booting because the buffer hang feature is not there for SPI.

The 21469 processor supports link port booting. You should be able to boot it from the FPGA. Regarding the HPUSBICE booting, do you mean loading the code on the processor using the tools?? If so , yes you can load code via the emulator .

My question is: Is it possible to boot with HPUSBICE, even default (Link Port) booting fails. Since Link Port booting involves several critical parts (e.g. Link Port transmitter, boot kernel) it may not work at the first try. Therefore we need one or more alternative boot methods. The nicest way would be to boot and to download test programs via JTAG interface. I have made some simple tests with the 21469 EZ-board.
The 21469 is configured for Link Port booting, but no transmitter is connected. So the DSP never receives the boot kernel and cannot boot. Then I try to download the power-on-self-test (POST) program with HPUSBICE.
One time the download with HPUSBICE was successful and I could run POST, but 2 times the host PC crashed hard (Windows XP was completely dead).
The 21469 is configured for SPI mater or slave booting, but no SPI master or slave has been connected. Again the DSP cannot boot and then I try to download a program with HPUSBICE. These tests were always successful and I was able to download and run programs on the DSP.
