ADV7612 vs ADV7611 and HDMI

I noticed a difference between the ADV7612 and the ADV7611. It is that the

7611 doesn't support 10-bit 4:2:2. I've never worked with HDMI before and am

not clear how the receiver determines the resolution offered. Doesn't the

transmitter determine the resolution? It seems to me that I can use the 7611

and set it to 12-bit mode and expect it to present me with 8, 10, or 12 bit

resolution mapped into those 12 bits. Is this assumption correct?
