What is the difference between these different ADI product categories and how do I know which category I want?
A fair question. These terms are fairly loose and they sometimes overlap. Here is a stab at some definitions.
RF/IF Transceiver: This is a device that incorporates both a transmitter and a receiver. It may or may not include mixed signal components such as ADCs and DACs.
Short Range Transceivers: This could be defined as a subset of RF/IF Transceivers. Short Range Transceivers define a family of transceivers which are designed and optimized for relatively low data rate transmission and reception over relatively short ranges (say, a few feet to a few hundred feet). These devices are typically used in wireless water, gas and electric meters, wireless remote controls and patient monitors in medical applications.
Tx/Rx Subsystem: This is generally understood to be a device which incorporates two or more functions in one chip (e.g. mixer and pll, mixer and VGA)
