Is it possible to have the AD9361 loop the ADC samples back onto the DAC output?
In other words: RF in -> Baseband -> ADC samples -> DAC -> RF out.
No, it is not. You could close the digital loopback path external to the part, but not at Rx ADC output/Tx DAC input internal to the part.
AD9361 has other similar options that you could possibly use:
1. BIST tone output at Tx port
2. BIST tone output at Rx port
3. loopback Tx port to Rx port
4. RF loopback, Tx port => Tx out => Rx in => Rx port.

The way I envision it, in the FMCOMMS2 tab of the IIO Scope app where you pick the transmit waveform (CW tone, 2-tone, DAC buffer, etc.), add an option for ADC samples, and maybe the ADC samples with a digital gain of 2 or 4 (for signals near sensitivity).

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll try to integrate this into future versions of the IIO Scope application. With the current iteration of the software this is unfortunately not easily possible due to the way the DMA for the transmit path works. Currently you set up a fixed sized buffer and the DMA keeps on sending out the same buffer to the DAC repeatedly. So you can not do transmission of a continuous data sample stream. But this is something we are working on and you'll see this in one of the next versions.
And alternative for you is to add a simple loopback path in the HDL connecting the output of the ADC to the DAC. This has the advantage that you wouldn't need any software interaction.
