A completely stupid pointer question

So... it seems that the ADuC and I both have a different opinion of what 0 is.  Never ran into this before so I'm beginning to think its due to my myopia about data type sizes in ARM7-land....  Why is val not 0?

I sent a 0 via modbus, but this routine says the value is 0x4020000; the point was if the modbus master couldn't properly write a 32 bit value, you could write a 0 and it would take the current value from the sensor instead.  But I never get a 0...
