Ethernet communication can not be resumed after cable is re-plugged

I'm using BF537 and Lwip for the Ethernet application. I can successfully communicate with my board through Ethernet using Hyperterminal. And then I unplugged the Ethernet cable, and plugged it back. The communication is lost and never come back. And I have to reset the board.

I'm wondering how the lwip takes care of the situation that the cable is unplugged in the middle of a communication session. Can someone provide some insights or an example where this situation is gracefully dealt with.
