looking at the datasheet for the ADCMP566 is has +5v and -5.2v supplies. why is the -ve suplpy offset? I am using this device with 5V and -5V supplies and according to the datasheet this meets the requirements. will I get any strange behaviour?

Running the ADCMP566 at +/- 5V will not hurt the part. The headroom will be reduced a bit and may impact some of the specifications such as input common mode voltage range, input different range, etc.
Also the -5.2V provides a convenient voltage for the required ECL termination on the comparator outputs. See Fig. 11 in the datasheet of ADCMP566.
Thankyou, The comparator output is being termination by a 50ohm to -2v, as it feeds into a MC100ep29 ECL clocked D buffers (data inputs) which are also ECL. The use is for a constant fraction discrimator. The MC100EP25 is clock by another comparator a set to -100mV trigger.
Therefore I have not go -5.2 as these buffers are in NECL mode(ie 0v vcc, -5V vee)
I have +5v and -5v and was going to add extra power filtering with a RC (by adding a 22r before decoupling each supply) on the each comparator device supplies( one resistor for +5v and one for -5V only to one IC). Question is how low can the supplies go before effecting the operation too much?
Thank you for the application conditions. The ADCMP566 test program only performs test at the specified power supply voltages. As such there is no data available for the performance of the ADCMP566 at -5.0V.
Discussing the application with the design team, the ADCMP566 will not “break” with a negative supply at -5.0V, however care should be taken to keep the input signal voltages well away from the Power supply rails. We recommend that you verify the performance with the -5.0V supply to determine if the performance is acceptable for the application. The design team does not expect the performance to change much if at all for input signals voltage levels that are much less than the power supplies rails, however ADI cannot guarantee the performance at a -5.0V power supply as it is not tested at this condition.
