In the idle mode, there will be no activity on the timer pins as the timers will not be functional. If you are not using timer in your application, configure it in idle mode which will prevent inadvertent writes to timer registers.
As mentioned in HRM, when TIMER_CONFIG.TMODE field is configured for idle mode, the Timer Period (TIMER_PERIOD), Timer Width (TIMER_WIDTH) and Timer Delay (TIMER_DELAY) registers are locked and non-writable. If you are using Timer in your application, anyway it has to be configured in the appropriate mode.
