AD-FMCOMMS1-EBZ Quick Start Problem - ZYNQ

I have created the SD card for the Zedboard Evaluation Kit using the image file zed_xcomm_image_8gb.xz. The kit appears to boot all right, based on the terminal messages being the same as those included in the Quick Start Documentation. However after completing the boot up process neither firefox or the IIO Scope tool start as is suggested they should. The HDMI display simply displays the Ubuntu log in screen. Well, not quite. The HDMI display of the Ubuntu log in screen is not quite right, in that there are rectangles where there should be characters. It is like the language setting is not correct, so the ASCII code for the characters is wrong. The Zedboard is version C. I don't seem to find anyone else on this forum with this problem. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?
