In the case of AD9914, the registers can be read back, so in concept you can determine the frequency of operation by just reading the FTW register. In this application, consequent read back from the register may not be an efficient method since the data rate would be limited to 8 bits per transfer wherein FTW is a 32 bit register. Another approach that I can think of is to synchronize the microcontroller to the DDS. Since the interval rate of the DRG is synchronous to the SYNC_CLK, acquisition time of the targeted frequency can be determined by using timers that are synchronized to the SYNC_CLK.
