Updated Instructions for installing ADXL345 drivers to existing Raspberry Pi?

I am trying to get the ADXL345 working on my Raspberry pi running the latest build of Wheezy (originally build 12-16-12. since apt-get dist-upgrade to most recent version). I have a fair amount of customization into this build, so starting over with a fresh install isn't my first choice.

With that in mind:

  1. Has anyone gotten the ADXL345 drivers running w/o starting from a new install?  (I'm a beginner-intermediate linux user...  I would think it would be possible to recompile/patch the ADXL345 drivers from my existing install.
  2. Is there a preferred communication protocol?
    1. I2C - I'm able to detect the presence of the ADXL345 ([sudo i2cdetect -y 0] returns address #53)
    2. SPI - Read somewhere that this protocol supports higher refreshrates, true?

Thanks again..
